VELD & FOREST FIRE, AGRICULTURAL PRODUCT STANDARDS BILLS SET TO LEAVE PARLIAMENT

Please note: On 24 November 2023, Parliament issued a backdated media statement confirming that the NCOP has passed both Bills. They have been sent to the President for signature.

The National Veld & Forest Fire Amendment Bill’s ‘B’ version and a ‘B’ version of the Agricultural Product Standards Amendment Bill were scheduled to be considered on 22 November 2023 during mini plenaries of the NCOP. This is according to a parliamentary media statement confirming arrangements already published in the latest programme for both Houses.

NCOP Land Reform, Environment, Mineral Resources & Energy Committee reports having proposed no further changes to either Bill, they are likely to be passed and sent to the President for signature.

The purpose of the National Veld & Forest Fire Amendment Bill is to align it with recent developments in sustainable forest management, especially given:

  • environmental and biodiversity management imperatives, and
  • advances in science, technology and research necessitating a co-operative governance approach to natural resource management.

The Agricultural Product Standards Amendment Bill’s overarching purpose is to close gaps in the management system affecting inspection, auditing, production practices and quality control.
