VETERINARIANS: INPUT SOUGHT ON REPLACEMENT COMMUNITY SERVICE REGULATIONS

The Department of Agriculture, Land Reform & Rural Development has called for input by 25 May 2025 on draft regulations intended to repeal and replace the November 2015 version on community service for newly qualified veterinarians. Applicable to those registering with the professional council concerned, among other things one year’s service is envisaged.

Gazetted on 26 April 2025 under the 1982 Veterinary & Paraveterinary Professions Act, the proposed new regulations include:

  • procedures to be followed by the council, in liaison with the department
  • places where compulsory community service may be performed
  • conditions of service
  • misconduct and disciplinary matters, and
  • exemption application procedures.
