VOTER REGISTRATION: EFF TO TABLE ELECTORAL MATTERS AMENDMENT BILL

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has gazetted a notice announcing his intention to table an Electoral Matters Amendment Bill in Parliament. The notice serves as the Bill’s procedurally required pre-tabling explanatory memorandum – also calling for input by 19 July 2026 on what is envisaged.

According to the notice, the overarching objective of this proposed new piece of legislation will be to provide for automatic voter registration in the context of South Africa’s ‘high levels of migration’ among young people in particular. The EFF view is that this would go some way towards addressing ever-declining levels of voter registration.

‘Constant movement makes it difficult for young, working-age South Africans to update their registration details’, the notice continues. Automatic voter registration based on population data would ‘shift the burden of registration from individual initiative to the state’ – facilitating ‘greater participation among typically under-represented groups’, including ‘youth and the poor’.
