The Department of Forestry, Fisheries & the Environment has gazetted and called for input on a draft strategy for managing absorbent hygiene product waste. The deadline for comment is 11 May 2025.
Developed under the 2008 National Environmental Management: Waste Act, the draft strategy focuses on the design, life cycle and control of disposable diapers and other absorbent hygiene products. This is noting the increasing post-usage prevalence of these products not only in landfill sites but elsewhere. Apparently, ‘improper disposal’ is common in ‘rural and informal communities lacking formal waste management systems’.
Against that backdrop, the phased introduction of compulsory recovery, treatment and recycling is envisaged over a period of 15-years. This would focus on producing pellets as an alternative to coal. Various funding options are proposed, including water resource protection and sustainable rural development grants, as well as levies.
