WASTE MANAGEMENT: DRAFT EXEMPTION APPLICATION REGULATIONS OUT FOR COMMENT

The Department of Forestry, Fisheries & the Environment has called for input by 10 April 2026 on draft regulations outlining the process to be followed when applying for an exemption under the 2008 National Environmental Management: Waste Act. Application processing procedures are included, with timeframes.

Once finalised and in force, the proposed new regulations will apply to anyone seeking exemption from:

  • waste management registration and licensing requirements
  • associated public participation processes, and
  • norms and standards compliance.

It is nevertheless envisaged that the intention to apply for such an exemption would entail public consultations.
