The Department of Forestry, Fisheries & the Environment has gazetted and called for input on draft amendments to five sets of regulations under the 2008 National Environmental Management: Waste Act. The deadline for comment is 5 December 2026.
According to a covering notice, the purpose of the latest set of proposed amendments to the extended producer responsibility regulations is to:
- consolidate input received on draft amendments released in 2021 and 2024 for consultation, thus
- ‘eliminat(ing) the ambiguities and uncertainty … experienced by … (affected) regulated industry sectors and … stakeholders’.
Against that backdrop, related amendments are also envisaged for the following sector-specific extended producer responsibility schemes:
- paper, packaging and certain related single use products
- electrical and electronic equipment
