The Department of Forestry, Fisheries & the Environment has called for input by 20 November 2023 on two more sets of proposals relating to waste tyre management.
The latest draft amendments to the 2017 waste tyre management regulations follow similar proposals gazetted in January 2023 for public comment. Presumably, they are informed by responses to the first iteration.
The latest draft waste tyre management plan follows one published in March 2022 for public comment – and presumably informed by input received at the time. It was prepared by the Council for Scientific & Industrial Research.
A media statement explaining why it has become necessary to prolong the process would have been helpful. This is especially noting that it began in September 2016 with draft regulatory amendments, followed in March 2017 with a call to industry stakeholders for waste tyre management plan proposals.
The Recycling Economic Development Initiative of South Africa integrated waste tyre management plan approved in November 2012 was withdrawn five years later. Since then, the department’s Waste Management Bureau has been responsible for waste tyre management, funded by the tyre levy.
