WATER AND SANITATION: DEPARTMENT UNPACKS LATEST MUNICIPAL SERVICE QUALITY REPORTS

The blue drop, green drop and no-drop water and sanitation service quality reporting programme is a support and regulatory mechanism intended to identify shortcomings and assist municipalities in their efforts to address them. This is according to a Department of Water & Sanitation media statement on the latest reports, which were published on 6 June 2023.

Suspended in 2014, the programme was reintroduced seven years later. In April 2022, the department released a full Green Drop Report, since when only a few municipalities wastewater systems in a ‘critical condition’ have implemented the necessary corrective action plans.

When compared with findings in the April 2022 Blue Drop Progress Report, the latest Blue Drop Watch report points to a deterioration in water quality during the intervening 12-month period.

A relatively new intervention, the No-Drop Watch Report provides insights into the efficiency of municipal drinking water systems by measuring the volume of non-revenue water used. According to the department’s media statement, nearly half the volume of drinking water supplied by municipalities is ‘non-revenue’ – comprising water losses and unbilled consumption.
