WATER RESOURCE REHABILITATION MANAGEMENT: DRAFT GUIDELINES OUT FOR COMMENT

The Department of Water & Sanitation has called for input by 29 October 2025 on five sets of water resource-specific rehabilitation management guidelines – as well as overarching draft guidelines on their practical application. Posted on the Parliamentary Monitoring Group (PMG) website and apparently ‘under development since 2020’, each resource-specific draft guideline outlines the ‘step-by-step’ rehabilitation measures and interventions available to water users – separately focusing on:

  • rivers
  • wetlands
  • estuaries
  • groundwater, and
  • lakes and dams.

Once finalised, an overarching draft ‘guidelines in practice’ document is expected to assist users in their efforts to apply each set of measures ‘in real-world situations’. This is noting that the term ‘user’ includes the full spectrum of stakeholders – from government authorities, entities and institutions to the private sector and civil society.

At the time of writing, the media statement to which the PMG notice refers had yet to be posted on the department’s website.

  • draft guidelines on river rehabilitation management
  • draft guidelines on wetland rehabilitation management
  • draft guidelines on estuary rehabilitation management
  • draft guidelines on lake and dam rehabilitation management
  • draft guidelines on groundwater rehabilitation management
  • draft ‘guidelines in practice’
  • PMG notice
