WATER RESOURCES INFRASTRUCTURE AGENCY ACT IN FORCE

Except for one sub-section, the South African Water Resources Infrastructure Agency Soc Ltd Act is now in force – formally establishing the agency as a state-owned company and major public entity.

According to the presidential proclamation announcing this, subsection 3.2 is not yet in effect. Interestingly, that sub-section requires the Finance Minister to amend Schedule 2 of the 1999 Public Finance Management Act to include the listing of the Agency as a major public entity.

Gazetted in September 2024, according to a Presidency media statement issued at the time the agency is responsible for:

  • infrastructure management and development
  • mobilising finance for new projects, and in that regard
  • developing ‘innovative models to crowd in private investment’.
