WATER SERVICES CRISIS: NATIONAL ACTION PLAN PUBLISHED

The Presidency has issued a media statement announcing the release of a national water action plan intended to ‘ensure a reliable supply of quality water to all South Africans’.

According to the statement, the plan ‘sets out a focused, programmatic series of actions’ expected to ‘address the root causes of the water supply challenges in many municipalities’. The plan includes:

  • a strategy for increasing private sector and other investment in water infrastructure, and
  • legal and regulatory reforms aimed at:
    • improving municipal service delivery, and
    • addressing water sector corruption and criminality.

Blaming the ‘inappropriate’ water services delivery model and ‘diffuse accountability’ for the deepening crisis, the plan introduces a ‘fundamental shift’ in water services management.
