WATERWORKS AND SURROUNDING LAND: ACCESS FOR RECREATIONAL PURPOSES

The Department of Water & Sanitation has withdrawn draft regulations gazetted in April 2023 for comment in anticipation of restricting access to water infrastructure and surrounding land. At the time, the intention was to:

  • ensure that recreational water use in these areas is compatible with other water uses
  • protect biodiversity and broader ecosystems
  • facilitate recreational water user safety, and
  • minimise risk to the government authorities concerned.

According to the statement, the decision to withdraw the draft regulations was informed by comments received during the public consultation process. Revised regulatory proposals will be released in due course.
