The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa has opened the lower 6GHz spectrum band to Wi-Fi services.
According to a media statement on the regulatory amendment entailed, among other things it will give the remote local area network and Wi-Fi service uptake ‘a much-needed boost’.
The amendment adds the lower 6GHz spectrum band to a list of apparatus exempt from radio frequency spectrum licensing requirements in terms of Annexure B to the 2015 regulations. Compliance with other regulatory prescripts nevertheless remains mandatory.
