WOMEN IN SPORT: DRAFT POLICY OUT FOR COMMENT

Please note: On 9 June 2023, a notice was gazetted formally calling for public input on the draft policy by 30 June 2023.

The Department of Sport, Arts & Culture has gazetted a draft policy on women in sport – presumably for public comment, although there is no covering notice to say so and no deadline prescribed. This notwithstanding, according to a media statment on Cabinet's 15 March 2023 meeting, input on the pollcy proposals concerned will be sought.

Whatever the case, according to its executive summary, once operationalised the proposed new policy is expected to go some way towards ensuring ‘redress’ for ‘existing inequalities’ creating obstacles to the participation of girls and women in competition, coaching, officiating and leadership. To that end, it explores myriad issues including:

  • socio-cultural values stemming from South Africa’s ‘entrenched patriarchal ideology’ and related gender role stereotyping
  • inadequate media coverage of women’s sport and the difficulties associated with attracting advertising and sponsorship
  • issues specific to transgender and intersex athletes, sex-verification and testosterone levels, and
  • gender-based violence in sport.
