Please note: On 13 June 2023, the Department of Forestry, Fisheries & the Environment gazetted a notice extending to 31 December 2023 the timeframe within which a task team established in December 2022 is expected to have completed its work - which is to ‘identify and recommend voluntary exit options and pathways for the captive lion industry’. A department media statement issued the following day includes a link to the task team's terms of reference.
Captive lion industry breeders now have until 21 July 2023 to register for a voluntary exit programme being run by the Department of Forestry, Fisheries & the Environment. This was confirmed on 22 May 2023 in a Government Gazette notice giving practical effect to Minister Barbara Creecy’s 2023/23 budget vote speech announcement.
As SA Legal Academy Policy Watch has already reported, registering to participate in the voluntary exit programme ‘does not constitute any obligation to proceed’ with exiting the industry.
