CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM INQUIRY: MADLANGA COMMISSION REPORTING DEADLINES CLARIFIED

Please note: On 12 March 2026, a presidential proclamation was gazetted in terms of which the Commission now has until 31 August 2026 to submit its final report. A second interim report is expected to be handed to President Cyril Ramaphosa ‘on or before 29 May 2026’.

The Department of Justice & Constitutional Development has gazetted a presidential proclamation clarifying the timeframes within which the criminal justice system Madlanga Commission of Inquiry is expected to complete its interim and final reports.

Amending the Commission’s July 2025 terms of reference, the proclamation makes ‘17 September 2025 or such extended period as the President may determine’ the date marking the beginning of:

• the three-month period within which the Commission should complete its interim report, and
• the six-month period within which the Commission should complete its final report.
