JUDICIAL SERVICE COMMISSION: INPUT SOUGHT ON CONSOLIDATED APPOINTMENT-RELATED CRITERIA, GUIDELINES & PROCEDURES

The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has called for input by 30 November 2026 on proposals for consolidating the criteria, guidelines and procedures for:

  • considering candidates for judicial appointment, and
  • dealing with breaches of members’ duties of confidentiality, law and ethical standards.

According to an accompanying media statement, the document envisaged would include two revised and updated sets of procedures released in draft form in August 2026 for input by 17 September 2026.

As SA Legal Academy reported at the time, these were proposed procedures for dealing with:

  • shortlisting, interviewing and recommending candidates for judicial appointment, and
  • breaches of JSC members’ duties regarding confidentiality, legal obligations and applicable ethical or professional standards.

It is not clear from the statement if input received on those proposals was considered when preparing the consolidated document now open for comment.
