NUCLEAR REGULATOR: 2024 AMENDMENT ACT IN FORCE

The 2024 National Nuclear Amendment Act is now in force, according to a presidential proclamation in the Government Gazette.

Parliament passed the Bill concerned in May 2024, less than a year after it was tabled. According to a memorandum on its objects at the time, the proposed new piece of legislation sought to align the principle statute with prevailing international nuclear safety regulatory best practices. This was especially noting provisions to which a May 2023 post-Cabinet meeting media statement and the Bill’s pre-tabling explanatory memorandum drew attention, as SA Legal Academy reported at the time: They included:

  • addressing the ‘occupational exposure of aircrew to cosmic radiation’, and
  • planning financially for safely:
    • decommissioning and rehabilitating nuclear facilities, and
    • decontaminating, decommissioning and closing national defence force facilities, equipment, machinery and scrap for civilian use.
