PARLIAMENT: ESKOM DEBT RELIEF, CANNABIS AND DIVORCE BILLS SENT TO PRESIDENT

According to recently circulated parliamentary papers and an associated media statement, the following Bills have left Parliament and will be sent to the President for signature:

  • the Eskom Debt Relief Amendment Bill (among other things, empowering the Minister to reduce the amount of a loan to Eskom should the utility fail to comply with conditions in the principal statute)
  • the Cannabis for Private Purposes Bill’s ‘B’ version (on which SA Legal Academy has already reported), and
  • the Divorce Amendment Bill’s ‘B’ version (on SA Legal Academy has also reported).

The process of signing a Bill into law may take some time. In certain cases, regulations need to be drafted before a new piece of legislation is operationalised. Many Bills are signed into law and published as Acts for information purposes but do not immediately come into effect.
