According to recently circulated parliamentary papers and an associated media statement, the following Bills have left Parliament and will be sent to the President for signature:
- the Eskom Debt Relief Amendment Bill (among other things, empowering the Minister to reduce the amount of a loan to Eskom should the utility fail to comply with conditions in the principal statute)
- the Cannabis for Private Purposes Bill’s ‘B’ version (on which SA Legal Academy has already reported), and
- the Divorce Amendment Bill’s ‘B’ version (on SA Legal Academy has also reported).
The process of signing a Bill into law may take some time. In certain cases, regulations need to be drafted before a new piece of legislation is operationalised. Many Bills are signed into law and published as Acts for information purposes but do not immediately come into effect.
