SIGNAL DISTRIBUTION: ICASA TO ADDRESS ‘INEFFECTIVE COMPETITION’

The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) has completed its inquiry into the competitiveness of the country’s signal distribution market. Begun in September 2021, according to a findings document on the inquiry’s outcome, ‘ineffective competition’ negatively impacts on terrestrial signal distribution services in the television, FM radio and AM radio markets. Sentech’s ‘significant market power’ is to blame.

ICASA’s next step will be to embark on the process of developing regulations to address the problem.

The announcement follows the release of a supplementary discussion document in February 2024, as SA Legal Academy reported at the time.
