WASTE MANAGEMENT: AMENDMENTS TO TWO SETS OF REGULATIONS NOW IN FORCE

The Department of Forestry, Fisheries & the Environment has gazetted final amendments to two sets of regulations under the National Environmental Management: Waste Act. One deals with amendments to the waste classification regulations; the other with amendments to the regulations on waste to landfill.

Somewhat confusingly, the waste-to-landfill regulatory amendments have been published as schedules to two separate notices:

• one substantively changes the norms and standards , while
• the other deals with:
  • sampling and analysis, and
  • chemical substance leachable concentration levels.

The final regulatory amendments follow the release of two sets in draft form in March 2023 for public comment, as SA Legal Academy reported at the time.
