JUDICIAL MATTERS AMENDMENT BILL OPENED FOR SUBMISSIONS

The National Assembly’s Justice & Constitutional Development Committee has issued a media statement calling for written submissions by 10 July 2025 on the Judicial Matters Amendment Bill.

Approved by Cabinet in December 2024 for tabling – and formally introduced in Parliament three months later – the Bill’s proposed amendments are largely technical, practical and non-contentious in nature.

This is according to a memorandum on its objects, which also refers to:

  • provisions in the Bill remedying ‘constitutional defects where there is already a reading in’ (referring to a 2023 Constitutional Court ruling on sections 35 and 46 of the 2000 Promotion of Access to Information Act), and
  • changes to the composition of the Judicial Conduct Committee (by increasing its membership and empowering its chair to appoint temporary members to facilitate the handling of complaints ‘expeditiously’).
