LIQUOR PRODUCTS REGULATIONS: MORE AMENDMENTS GAZETTED & IN FORCE

The Department of Agriculture, Land Reform & Rural Development has gazetted another set of amendments to regulations in place since 1990 under the 1989 Liquor Products Act. Immediately effective, among other things the latest amendments affect:

  • the sugar and alcohol content of an array of liquor products
  • the colour, flavour and aroma of an array of liquor products
  • the origin of certain liquor products
  • containers, packaging and labelling
  • offences and penalties
  • the appeals process, and
  • miscellaneous matters specific to:
    • flavoured spirits
    • hop products
    • traditional African beer
    • wine
    • alcoholic apple beverages
    • various classes of fermented beverage
    • beer
    • various classes of agave spirits
    • various classes of brandy
    • cane spirits
    • rum
    • absinthe, and
    • gin.

This follows the release of two sets of proposed amendments to the regulations in February and May 2024 for public comment, as SA Legal Academy reported at the time.
